Job Search Coaching with Sarah Johnston– LinkedIn Top Voice and Industry Career Thought Leader

Job searching is undoubtedly hard. Sometimes, it helps to have a “friend” or coach help you navigate the online world of social networking or challenge you to think strategically about your job search strategy. Don’t be the person who applies to 20 jobs a day for five months. That’s maddening!

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.

Why job seekers need an executive interview and career coach

“Why would you leave your good recruiting job to be a job search coach” is a question that I got a lot when I first started my career coaching business. For me, the answer was simple. Most job seekers do not know how to position themselves or tell their stories. As a recruiter, I saw talented and hard-working people get passed over for opportunities because they didn’t know to play the game.

The job market has changed so much in a short period. When I first started recruiting, it was typical for a job req to get 15-20 applicants. Today–with the rise of online applications and virtual hiring– it’s not uncommon for a company to get a hundred or more applications. Not only is job searching more competitive, you practically have to be a Chief Marketing Officer running a job search campaign with all of this talk about your “brand” and online persona. It’s overwhelming and hard to navigate alone.

If you look at the research, the Harvard Business Review recently released a stat that shows that the odds of job search success for job seekers who use a job search program are 2.67 times higher, as noted in “The Effectiveness of Job Search Interventions: A Meta-Analytic Review.”

The impact of a job loss is great.

Let’s say you are making $100,000.

Unfortunately, because of Covid, you find yourself among the 51 million unemployed Americans.

Research shows us that the average job search (in a good economy) is 5 months long.

100,000/12 = $8,333.33 income lost every month you are unemployed.

$8,333 X 5 = $41,6666. And this number doesn’t factor in health insurance, retirement, stock options, etc. etc.

Working with me, I not only can make you look good on paper, but I can also help you narrow your focus, think strategically about your search, better articulate your unique value, have outcome-focused -and- authentic networking conversations.

My Clients Land Jobs

Even when unemployment numbers were over 10% in the spring and summer of 2020, the majority of my resume and coaching clients landed jobs in an average of 3-4 months (which is HUGE considering the majority of the people who hire me are in complex, niche or leadership roles).

Job searching is a learned skill. The investment you make in yourself pays off in spades for years to come.

  • “I want to talk through how to create a strategic job search. I want you to help me develop an actionable plan”

Our coaching style.

Most of my clients are senior management to C-Suite. Occasionally, I have the opportunity to work with early-career professionals, and I enjoy supporting a first job search. The common thread connecting the people I work best with is that they are outcome-focused high performers.

I am an action-oriented coach. I work best with people who are motivated and ready to make a change. I don’t do well dragging clients along. If you are struggling with motivation and need an accountability partner, I will share some quality referrals.
